Safety
The salty tang of a sea breeze greeted them.
The haze in the air that Tam had created had been a magical portal of some kind. He assured them it was safe but they all approached it with some trepidation; only Kia seemed at ease with the thought of a magical doorway that could transport you to somewhere else in an instant.
The journey had taken an instant; one minute Rin had been standing near the fields flooded by the fall of Haven, and the next she was in a grassy meadow, the sound of the sea gently filling her ears, the bright warmth of the sun hitting her face. She had gone through quickly after Kia, not wanting the girl to be alone in whatever place they ended up in when they exited the other side. Yosuke and the others followed behind, and Tam brought up the rear, closing the haze-like portal behind him as he stepped out onto the grass. The others seemed to have taken the journey rather well, apart from Shinori who sat doubled over on the ground trying not to expel the contents of his stomach.
âAre you okay, Shinori?â Rin asked as they all stood admiring the views around them.
âIâll be fine.â His reply was strained. âJust donât ever make me do that again.â
âWhere are we?â asked Yosuke, looking out over the surroundings as if trying to determine where they were.
âThis is Seiiki no Shima. A safe place,â Tam answered as he strode forward.
âI thought you were taking us to, where was it, Saigo something or other?â Hikari interrupted.
âThe village is here on this island,â replied Tam, seemingly unconcerned at Hikariâs interruption and continued talking to them all as he began to make his way up the grassy hillside next to them. âYou are safe here. The Church will bother you not. And I am sure you will want to speak to Chie.â
âWho?â Rin asked, not sure who they were being led to an audience with.
âYou will see. If anyone can help you find a path it will be Chie,â replied Tam, still walking as he answered, continuing to climb the hillside and heading off away from the group. They quickly decided to keep up with him.
The grassy meadow they had arrived upon sat next to the golden sands of a pristine beach with crystal waters rising against its shores. Now they were climbing away from the sea and inland towards what they could all only assume was the centre. As they reached the top of the hill, the group stood for a moment. Spreading out below them away from the hill they had just climbed were fields of crops, standing tall and swaying in the gentle winds. For miles, they stretched inwards from the sea. In the distance, Rin could just make out the glint of waters from a lake and the faint outlines of buildings upon its shore, the village Tam was guiding them to.
The large figure of Tam was already striding down the side of the hill into the fields and the worn dirt pathway leading between the crops.
